A few things Disney princesses teach us about finding our own happy ending

Have you ever wondered what it felt like to get everything you’ve ever dreamed of? To cure cancer, be the President of the United States, fly to the moon, be on Broadway or maybe just meet the man you’ve been waiting for to sweep you off your feet, start a family and live happily ever after. I have, too, because who doesn’t want their own happy ending?

Ever since I can remember, I have loved everything Disney. I grew up watching all of the Disney princesses conquer the world and find their prince. So, of course, I would have high expectations when it comes to finding my own happy ending. Looking back at the princesses and the way my life is today I learned a few things.

It's OK to be ordinary.

Everybody knows the story of Cinderella. She was an ordinary girl whose mother passed away when she was very young, leaving her father to remarry. The beginning of Cinderella’s story has many similarities to children in today’s society. Many children lose their parents, by no fault of their own, as a result of addiction, abandonment, imprisonment and by much more.

While growing up, Cinderella worked hard for her accomplishments, but at the same time put up with a lot of bullying from her step-family. However, in the end her hard work and perseverance brought her out on top, with Prince Charming by her side to complete her happy ending. So, if you can relate to Cinderella’s life story, just know that with your hard work and positive outlook on life you too will be able to find your happy ending.

Fight for what you believe in.

Mulan was a young lady who grew up in a strict Chinese culture. She believed that protecting and representing her family was the honorable thing to do. Mulan pretended to be a man serving in the Chinese army in order to protect her father from further harm. She never gave up fighting for what she believed in, even after her identity as a woman was revealed.

In the end Mulan was able to get her happy ending by saving her country from war, honoring her family and getting the man of her dreams. So be like Mulan. Stand up for what you believe in and don’t be afraid to voice your opinion on matters you hold close to your heart.

Follow your heart.

Pocahontas fell in love with John Smith, but her father wanted her to marry a Native Indian warrior from their tribe. In today’s world, Pocahontas’ story is not as fictional as you might think. How many times have you walked into your local shopping mall or turned on your television and have seen interracial couples and families? Today, couples are not only adopting children in need from all over the world, but the couples themselves are becoming more and more diverse than they used to be, thus helping America to live up to its legacy of being the great melting pot.

If it were not for Pocahontas following her heart by marrying John Smith, instead of the Native Indian from her tribe, the respect of interracial couples in America may not be as high as it is today.

So don’t be afraid to be ordinary, stand up for what you believe in, follow your heart or anything else that makes you, you because in the end you too will find your happy ending.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
