Staying physically healthy is something many people are conscious of, and we take steps everyday to try to maintain our body's health; such as drinking eight cups of water, having vegetables with every meal, and doing some form of exercise. It is just as important to be mentally healthy, so here are the everyday things you can do to maintain your mind.

1. Say positive affirmations.

Saying kind words to yourself can be really empowering. The more you say them, the truer they become.

2. Take a break.

Step away from electronics and work and socializing by going outside, walking around for a bit, and getting breath of fresh air to clear your thoughts.

3. Practice mindful breathing.

Daily stressors can really take a toll on your health, and mindful breathing can help soothe that stress. There are many different exercises that can work for anybody after some practice.

4. Smile.

It has been proven that forcing yourself to smile can actually improve your mood, so smile away!

5. Get your Vitamin D.

There is a positive correlation between Vitamin D and Depression, so if you spend all day inside, getting some sunshine or taking supplements could help with your mood as well as your physiology.

*Disclaimer: Speak with your doctor before taking Vitamin D supplements.

6. Have time for yourself.

After long days at work or at school, giving yourself personal time can be super important. Every night, I give myself at least an hour and a half to wind-down and destress by watching YouTube videos, reading a few chapters, and petting my cat. Find a ritual that helps keep you sane.

7. Keep your space tidy.

I know, cleaning is not a fun way to spend your time, but I find that keeping my bedroom clean also keeps my mind free of unnecessary clutter.

8. Be aware of your emotions.

Emotional intelligence is a very beneficial skill to have. The ability to correctly identify your emotions can help you better your reactions to them in a way that makes you more positive and productive.

Just as we take responsibility for our bodies, it is equally vital to take control of our minds. Stay clear from negativity by creating a mental fitness routine that works with your everyday life, and enjoy the genuine smiles you see in the mirror.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
