Walking around a college campus on any given Thursday, Friday or Saturday night can be an interesting experience. You may see some outfits that look like lingerie, some people who should be back in their beds instead of stumbling into another party, and others who are completely alone. Some situations you see won't feel right in your gut: but what do you do then? What if you don't know them? If they're guys who are twice your size? A couple you feel you shouldn't get in between? No matter your personality or the situation: we can all act.
We can all be direct, distracting or delegate. There are some of us who have the strength to speak up about the situation and help those in need personally. Some others might be best at lightening the situation with humor or distracting the crowd by being the freak dancing on the coffee table. Those who are a little more introverted, have no fear, you still have the power to help and be someone's hero. You have the power to delegate. You have the power to call your campus safety, your local police, a Resident Assistant, or a friend for backup.
Everyone has the power to help someone in need. Just because multiple people SEE something, does not mean multiple people DO something. So be the one who ACTS. Be bold and be brave.
When you see something that you know isn't okay: imagine the person being your best friend, sibling, cousin, roommate, or significant other rather than a stranger. Would you act up then? If so, then you should act up now. Because everyone is something to someone. Everyone matters and everyone has importance.
