Everybody Has A Vice

What's so wrong with that?

How do we all exist is this world without constantly killing each other? How are we not the most tense creatures that could possibly be observable? Why have we evolved to learn to use tools to make life easier? I'll be the first to tell ya, folks: we all have a vice.

A vise is a metal tool with movable jaws that are used to hold an object firmly in place while work is done on it, but that doesn't really matter, because not everyone has a vise, but we all have a vice, a immorality or corruption we all ravish for that can release some sort of grudge or anger, most often guilt-free. Drugs, Sex, crime or anything that can get your adrenaline pumping and your mind racing with pleasure can serve as a vice, except BYU football, that doesn't count(even when they get annihilated, it's still BYU). We all have hobbies, we all have habits, but do we really all have a vice? Absolutely. Just like hobbies and habits, we all have something we can run to if we need to let off some steam, but with a vice, it's immoral and therefore more fun. Don't get me wrong, video games, hiking and ice hockey are all great ways to relieve myself of the pressures of life, but that aren't always as fun and as relieving as underage drinking and recklessness of our well-being is. The entire idea around a vice isn't exactly how enjoyable it is to everyone, but how enjoyable it feels while also being just plain villainous.

Have you ever tried to have a conversation with a man before and after he's had sex? Beforehand, he sucks as a human; he doesn't listen, he doesn't care, and unless it could possibly make him happy, he will forget you ever tried talking to him. After, however, he listens well, actually gives a shit, and would jump on a grenade to make sure you're taken care of. The frustration and unknowing in his head cleared up, and he is now a brand new version of himself. We go from savages hitting other people around just to beat them up more than we get beat up as a recreation to poets reciting lines about nature, philosophy and beauty. People think more clearly after taking part in a vice, because they channel their aggression into something in an environment that possesses a feeling of taboo or wickedness for the purpose of stress relief, a very healthy habit, indeed.

Everybody has a vice, and I probably mentioned yours at some point in this article, but don't be ashamed if I did. We all need something to help us escape the stresses and angers of everyday life in ways we almost can't explain because of how brutal and honest they are, but that's what makes them effective and reliable. Besides, we are all creature of vices and virtues(intended Panic! at the Disco refrence), why try to change that?

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
