I was always raised to never discuss religion or politics because that is just something that makes people uncomfortable; when in reality this is what we SHOULD be discussing because without discussing different ideas and views then how are we as a society ever suppose to understand and respect these different ideas other than our own? What I’m trying to say is that this article might step on some people’s toes, especially those in my family so I’m going to say sorry in advance and I hope you still love me.
I know that the election day just passed and there are people who feel scared for their rights and there are people who are over the moon that Donald Trump won. Right now the country is divided. We’re not only divided between ages, races, social classes, education, political parties but we’re also divided by love and hate. No matter who you voted for I still love you. I may not agree with your choice but I respect your choice because as citizens of the United States we have that right to vote for whoever we want. As a country we need to be respectable for people’s feelings, there are minorities who are scared, they’re scared for their safety. Majorities shouldn’t tell the minority to get over it, that’s not the way it works. If we look back at the history of America all the way back to the early settlements of the English there has been oppression against the Native Americans all the way to the LGBTQ communities; these minorities, these people including myself have a right to be scared because history repeats itself. And when people say that we shouldn’t be scared or that we’re being too dramatic these actions and those words show us that you don’t care about us and that you don’t want America to succeed and prosper.
America is a melting pot, there are so many different races, cultures, and economic background; there are so many things as a country that we wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for this diverse place that we live in. So why are so divided? We’re divided because we don’t respect each other's differences we’re so set in our own mindsets that we don’t think about what it must be like to live as someone less fortunate or privileged as ourselves or vice versa. There is a difference in saying that you don’t like mayonnaise and saying that you don’t like African Americans or any other minority; you can get rid of mayonnaise but you can’t get rid of these minorities because just like everyone else we have a right to live in this country. America is suppose to be the land of the free yet we’re not letting each other be free. Being free includes being able to feel freely, speak freely and as sad as it is to fear freely.
As a minority I try to understand why people voted for Trump and why they favor him, so please those of you that voted for Mr. Trump please try and understand why we as minorities are afraid of him and his actions. Please don’t be insensitive to our feelings because the way that the media has portrayed him and the people have endorsed him- he was endorsed by a former House of Representative and former leader of the KKK, has given us every right to be afraid for our lives and our rights. We will try and respect your decision and your feelings so please try and do the same for us. We can not succeed and prosper as a country if we cannot respect each others ideas and opinions.
