I, along with everyone in the country after the events that have unfolded this past week, am outraged and heartbroken. Enough is enough. When will the violence and hatred end and the love and acceptance begin? This is no longer a matter of which race is more dominant or which profession brings the most issues, this is a matter of humanity being lost among everyone.
Police brutality has been an issue addressed in the news a lot recently due to two shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana. Alton Sterling was shot and killed by police officers, as was Philando Castile, in cold blood. Both are men, both are black, both were in totally different situations. Watching the videos I was in shock and my heart was honestly broken. There was a news interview with Philando's uncle and mother and their testimonies left me completely outraged. I'm not going to lie, "#blacklivesmatter" began to make sense to me. It made complete sense that the black community would seek justice after the continuous release of videos such as these, that is until the Dallas shooting.
Twelve innocent men were shot on this night. Twelve men who were protecting those firing the weapons. Twelve men with families. Twelve men who did nothing to those who were harming them except protect them. How is fighting violence with violence justice? Newsflash: it's not.
The only way we as a country can truly achieve change and obtain justice is by looking past the stereotypes, respecting one another, and simply just respecting human life.
Not every police officer is bad, not every black male is a thug, not every Muslim is a terrorist, and not every white person is racist. We all need to learn to coexist as one. As Lincoln said, "A house divided cannot stand." How can we be expected to take on the threats of the world fighting against us when we are fighting against each other? The violence and hatred must end.
All lives matter.
