As I stood in the concert venue, I heard the words "The world is a scary place, but here, you are safe, you can be yourself, and you can feel at home" spoken into the microphone by the guitarist.
Ever since then, those words have stuck with me. Especially recently, his voice and those exact words have been running through my head constantly. As soon as the news of the attack in Manchester was announced, my mind transported me right back to the concert when I heard those words of reassurance.
As I watched my TV flash videos and pictures of frightened people searching for safety, it was almost impossible for me to comprehend what was happening.
I've been to countless concerts and never once questioned my safety. For me, as well as for so many others, concerts are a safe haven where just for a few hours I can put my worries aside, and just live in the moment.
What happened in Manchester made me step back and think. I thought about the thousands and thousands of concerts that happen daily. I thought about the stages I've stood and performed on. I thought about how I would never be able to fully understand the utter terror that went on in Manchester.
But then, I thought about how many positives come from the power of music, performers, fans, concerts. I thought about how even though the world is broken place, we will not let the negatives stop us from going out and experiencing the culture that is surrounding us.
We must continue to hold each other up throughout the good times and the bad times. We must learn from the pain we go through and use it as a lesson to not take this life for granted.
Go out and continue to spread love, positivity, community and culture even if you are defeated and afraid. Make the difference you know you are capable of making. The world may be dark, but you have the ability to be a light.
But most importantly, keep the music playing because "One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain." - Bob Marley
