Do ya’ll ever have a thought and then the more you think about it, the more incredible the idea gets? I know I can’t be the only one. Anyways- lately the idea of the Lord’s grace has been on my mind. Grace is, by definition, a gift that one does not deserve. So when we think about the simplicity of it, the Lord’s forgiveness is grace because we cannot do anything to earn it.
That wasn’t news to me. I’d heard that in Sunday school since I could even remember. But as I get older and think about it more, I realize that grace is literally so incredible it should bring us to our knees daily.
I am a weak human. I am tempted. I fail myself. I disappoint others. I am by nature sinful and I’ve seen that many times. Even if I wanted to attempt, I could not measure up to the Lord’s standard of perfection. BUT it does not matter how many times I mess up or get it wrong- there’s not a limit on God’s grace. It’s there every time we fail. He catches us because HE loves us unconditionally. So I thank God for grace- because he provides a way for me to be with Him even when I fall short.
But this incredible, mind-blowing, undeserved gift that the Lord is giving to us is not an excuse to continue sinning without an effort to become more like Christ. We should still strive to live our lives worthy of the Gospel- worthy of His name being written across our hearts. We represent Him. My life is a screaming picture of His goodness- His power is seen in my weakness and failure. He saves those who do not deserve it, but blindly trust Him. I desire for my life to reflect THAT truth. I am not good, but He is.
We’ve all heard the song How He Loves with the perfect line “if His grace were an ocean, we’d all be sinking”. How true that is. We are surrounded by a grace that will not run out. It swallows our sins and washes us clean- His grace is mighty and powerful and we have no control over it. All we have to do is accept it.
The mountains will shake and my legs will be weak, but the God of all grace will break my fall. Take some time and think about grace. Think about all the times you fall into temptation, make a mistake, or fail. Think about all the times you are not “good”. Then I want you to think about the fact that Lord still loves and pursues you- regardless of how messy your life may be. His grace never dissatisfies, no matter how many times we may.
So rest in the fact that we will mess up, but even when we’re not enough, His grace is still is.
Ephesians 2:8-10
We don't deserve it, but we're saved by it. The scandal of this grace is its pursuit of the unworthy.
