As a girl who grew up in the new millennium, I've been inundated with Disney princess propaganda since I can remember. I'm sure Walt Disney would be rolling over in his cryo-chamber if he saw the degree to which princess paraphernalia is shoved down our throats. As for me, I can't help but think that maybe Disney's best princess isn't a princess at all. So I present my case why EVE, from "Wall-E," might be the best Disney princess ever.
1. She's career-oriented
EVE is a robot on a mission to find plant-based life on Earth, and she won't stop until she finds it. She doesn't spend her days lounging around, waiting for her prince to come. Marrying rich and living a life of leisure like Belle, while enticing, isn't really a good career goal for girls to aim for. Instead, EVE provides an example of a female figure that puts her ambition first. Also, since Wall-E is essentially a garbageman, it's safe to say that EVE's probably the robot breadwinner of the couple, which is also pretty cool.
2. She's literally universal
Although millions of young girls look up to Disney princesses, these princesses are often rendered with features that set a totally unrealistic example. EVE doesn't care about your ridiculous Eurocentric beauty standards. She's a robot! She also has no race, religion, or nationality. I feel like it's a lot easier for girls to relate to a dope robot like EVE than another boring European princess with giant eyes and tiny feet. Also, I think it's easier to believe that robots can become sentient than to believe that Jasmine could survive with a waist the same size as her neck.
3. She's no damsel in distress
So many fairy tales involve some sort of rescue, where the dashing prince saves the helpless princess from some curse. Kids don't need to see that trope repeated again and again. This is why I love "Wall-E." I mean, EVE is the one who reboots sickly Wall-E and saves his life. It's adorable and way more emotional than anything that ever happened in "Cinderella." And best of all, it proves that romance is more than just women depending on men.
4. But she's not afraid to be vulnerable
EVE is a high-end, brand new, state-of-the-art machine who's in love with Wall-E, an ancient, decrepit, dirty trash-bot (relatable, right?). It's kind of like a "Beauty and the Beast" situation, except nobody gets magically "transformed." Their love really is blind. As she dances through space with Wall-E, EVE proves that being powerful and being vulnerable aren't mutually exclusive. And while EVE's love story is sweet and endearing, it's not the main plot of the movie. "Wall-E" is a tale of redemption and hope and rebirth, a tale that just so happens to include love. EVE has a great love story, but it's not what defines her.
5. She saves humanity
The credits scene from "Wall-E" is EVERYTHING. Even though humans have literally trashed our planet, Wall-E and EVE teach us how to survive again, rebuilding a vibrant life on Earth as an amazing Peter Gabriel song plays in the background. It is all I've ever wanted from a movie. And it leaves the viewer astounded by the great pitfalls and possibilities of humanity. Which is a lot more than I can say for "Sleeping Beauty." So I think EVE deserves to stand with the other princesses as an excellent role model for all the young girls and sentient robots in this universe.
