Montenegro is one of those European countries that no one has ever heard of. No one knows where it is, what it is, what currency they take, or even what language they speak. Before I went to Kotor, a city in Montenegro, I didn't know anything about it either. However, it is a country that most people should know about because it is one of the most beautiful countries that I have ever visited. Kotor, Montenegro is a small country that is bordered by Croatia, Serbia, and Albania. The locals speak Montenegrin and the currency that they use is the Euro. Now that we have the basics on Montenegro, here are some reasons why you should visit the magical town of Kotor, Montenegro.
Beautiful Scenery and Views
Surrounding the city of Kotor are medieval fortifications, built to protect the Old City of Kotor from invaders. One popular activity to do is climb up and through the fortifications, where you get unbelievable views of the whole city and can visit clock towers and churches that were built in the mountains.
Its History
Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe. The Old Town of Kotor is so well preserved that you feel like you traveled back in time hundreds of years prior. In the Old Town, you will find old clock towers, quaint plazas, old churches, cobblestone streets, and numerous preserved palaces. You will also see many stray cats, whom have become the symbol of Kotor because there is so many of them in the town. Kotor has been influenced by many cultures, as it has been controlled by numerous countries and republics, including being controlled by the Venetian Empire for over 300 years.
Cute Surrounding Towns, like Perast, Montenegro
Perast is one town on the Bay of Kotor that is located just miles away from the main town of Kotor. It is a car-less town, so it is easy to get around the streets by walking. The town is surrounded by water and where you can easily eat lunch or dinner right on the water. There is ice cream shops, authentic food from Montenegro and old churches. When I was in Perast, I walked up a clock tower that was built in 1690 and was rewarded amazing views of Kotor Bay and Kotor. There is also a great museum there that has artifacts and tells the history of Kotor and its many invaders and controllers and how it has influenced their culture today.
Kotor is a hidden gem in Europe. Montenegro is definitely a country that should be on everyone's list when visiting Europe. It is filled with history, culture, amazing food, and breathtaking views.
