Have you ever stopped to wonder what entertainment actually means? Not the definition, but what it stands for? Could entertainment mean more than just being entertained? Entertainment, is when someone is provided with amusement. Without entertainment humans could not remain sane. Entertainment comes in many types of ways: books, television shows, movies, plays, musicals, music and many more ways.
In books our imagination seems to engulf us in whatever the book may be. For example, when the Percy Jackson series came out, I was so captured by the book I forgot to eat. Not only did I forget to eat but I stayed in bed until I finished the book. Once I had looked at my clock, I realized I had been in bed, awake but reading for six hours. Entertainment has that power over a person.
Have you ever watched an episode of a television show on Netflix and realize you just wasted eight hours of your life? Well then that television show is not worth your time. If a show is not amusing enough to make you want to binge watch the entire series. We as viewers crave what our favorite character will do next. Movies, do the same thing.
One movie changed my life. I know it sounds silly, but this movie was made for our entertainment and instead, this movie made me have a complete different perspective of life. Stuck in Love, took a certain spin on everyday life and love and changed my point of view on the topic of marriage.
Plays and musicals are harder to make. Why could that be?. You get one chance, one time to prove to the audience that you are more than just an entertainer playing a role. As an entertainer, the job is to make them a part of the performance as well. Make them feel like another version of themselves is up there, or make them question their views, beliefs and values.
Music, is by far one of the most widely known forms of entertainment. It has a way of instantly effecting your mood and/or bringing back a memory you tried so hard to keep hidden away. It is strange to think how one song can hold all of those emotions for someone. This is what every form of entertainment strives to do, to stick with you for years on end.
Usually any entertainment company gets the viewer’s money and is supposed to have them walking away feeling like it was not a complete waste of time. Entertaining someone feels like the greatest pat on the back. For example, think back to when your childhood and the feeling you got when you got your first A. The feeling of your heart pounding through your chest. Grinning from ear to ear, ready to get home to show mom and dad so they would put your work on the fridge. It meant you accomplished something. That feeling is what we as entertainers get anytime someone says “oh yeah that really was a wonderful performance.” As an entertainer all we really want is to be heard and be told you are good enough and that what you do matters. Really all humans want is to be amused, entertainment it what allows us that.
