Movies, TV, and Netflix, oh my!

I'm a weird viewer when it comes to movies and television. I feel it very intensely when a movie has wasted my time, less so with shows, but it takes a lot for a show to keep me choosing to watch episode after episode, plus when I watch a show I want to be compelled by the characters and be highly entertained. I tend to go for humor (okay maybe even a little corniness too) as well. And let's face it: for a lot of us 2016 was a rough year, but you know what's always there for us (besides Jesus, loved ones, and books of course)– Netflix and movies, here's what I'm most looking forward to in movies and television in 2017.

New Shows on Netflix

A Series of Unfortunate Events (Friday January 13) I cannot even fully put into words how excited I am for this. I can tell you that Friday after work, I'm going to make some popcorn, get a warm drink, and settle in for the night and watch at least the first two episodes (they're 50 mins each). Based on the book series by Lemony Snicket and starring Neil Patrick Harris as Olaf, it's sure to be a hit.

Bill Nye Saves the World (Spring 2017) For us 90s kids Bill Nye is a cult hero he's partnering with Netflix to create a new series with him and other hosts that will investigate the connections between science and culture/politics.

Dear White People (2017) Based off the movie with the same name, it looks at what it's like living in our "post racial" society. As of this writing not much is known about the show, but it's promising since it's made by the same people who made Orange is the New Black

New Season releases

New Girl (January 3) Besides The Office, New Girl is probably one of my absolute favorite shows. I'm looking forward to seeing how life in the Loft will continue, plus it's fun to see an eclectic group of people all doing life together, much like my own life. And since I know you're curious out all of them I would be best friends with Winston.

Big Bang Theory (January 5) I have to admit I didn't keep up with this show last season (much like I've fallen hopelessly behind with Once Upon a Time), but it's band of characters and all things nerd have made this a hit show year after year, I'm looking forward to catching up with it.

Saturday Night Live (January 14) SNL killed it last season, while I didn't always stay up late to watch every episode, I caught some and I watched so many skits that nailed it. I'm looking forward to more hilarious social commentary, like Black Jeporady.

Movies in Theaters

Power Rangers (March 24) I grew up watching the Power Rangers. I actually don't have huge confidence this is going to be a particularly good movie, but it's going to feed that nostalgic part of me. I'm looking forward to seeing all the different rangers kick some butt, and their costumes look really cool.

Beauty and the Beast (March 17) This is my husbands favorite Disney movie. I'm not always a fan of live action remakes, but I think this one will be a lot of fun. Plus Emma Watson is playing Belle, which I think is reason enough to see this in theaters.

The Lego Batman Movie (February 10) The Lego Movie was a surprising hit for me (this and Elf being the only Will Ferrell movie I've truly enjoyed). Batman has always been my favorite superhero movie and I loved him in the Lego Movie, looking forward to a new hit song and hilarious Lego action.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
