As We Enter Winter Term

These breaks are a bit of a disadvantage on a trimester system that we are on.

As We Enter Winter Term

You made it. Way to go! Whether it was your first term as a college student, somewhere in between, or your final first term, you made it! Now, we enter the second term of the school year: winter term.

As a sophomore, I speak from (very little) experience-- winter term is pretty rough. Not because of the course load, but because of the breaks we have. Winter term last year felt like it took an eternity to finally be over with. Don’t get me wrong, I love breaks, who doesn’t? Going home, being as lazy as possible, seeing family, and being in your own bed and not having to worry about classes. But these breaks are a bit of a disadvantage on a trimester system that we are on.

First, let’s talk about Thanksgiving break. Going home, eating as much food as possible, and watching football. However, being on the trimester system, it’s a bit rough, but not horrible. We get back to campus after Fall break, only to go right back home for about 4-5 days after being back on campus for a week and a half. This isn’t too bad, I mean, it’s only been about a week, so that’s what, maybe 3 classes of each course? Not too terrible, but it is a bit rough going back home and then right back to campus after a few days.

Now let’s talk about Christmas break... that’s where it gets rough. You come back from campus after Thanksgiving, get back into your classes for the next 3 weeks, have midterms (which are always awful) and then again, go back home. Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas break. I love being home, seeing my family, doing all of our Christmas traditions, celebrating and then heading into the New Year. But this break is a bit rough on the college student here at Augie. Not only did you just finish up midterms, but you’re most likely going to forget everything you’ve learned over the 3 week break, which is normal. You celebrate Christmas, party into the New Year, and forget most of the information you learned and tested over. Christmas break is great, but you have to be prepared for that gap of 3 weeks.

To the freshmen: Get ready for a rough and long term. Winter term can seem like it takes an eternity to finally be over due to the breaks we have. Like I already said, breaks are great and I love them, but they’re not always beneficial for us. Christmas break is wonderful, but it can totally mess with your mind and make you forget your normal school routine, and all the information you’ve learned in your classes. Get ready for a long term, but enjoy your time at home. It's few and far now that you get to be home for so long. To everyone else, get ready for another long term, but now we at least know how to deal with it!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
