Those who have grown up in the city may wonder what its like to live in a small town just as those from a small town imagine what it's like in the big city. Having been from a place that barely made the map on the weather forecast, I often found myself dreading the summer because of lack of attractions and activities around me. As I grew older I finally figured it out and put together some guidelines that will hopefully help others make the best of their summer in small town America.
Familiarize yourself with the history of your town
Chances are your town hasn't always been as boring as you may think. You can easily educate yourself by finding and visiting old historical landmarks and stores but you'll definitely be surprised at what you'll learn at the old lunch counter or drive-in. Yum!
Relax and take a drive
Take time to enjoy the luxury of not being stuck in traffic jams! Instead blast your own while navigating the old country roads your town has to offer.
Participate in city recreational sports/ activities
You are never too young or old to get out and have a little fun in the sun! Whether it be utilizing the city pool or coaching (or even playing) on a baseball team of your own, there are many other athletics and past times your city surely offers. By getting involved you are not only stimulating your community but also the youth in it!
Explore and enjoy nature
Whether you are an outdoor person or not, this is the easiest one because the beauty of nature is all around us. You could get fit by running your nearest nature trails, polish up your photography skills capturing sunrises and sunsets, or go wild by hunting, fishing, or just catching fireflies. No matter what, always leave mother nature in the loop!
Volunteer
With so much extra time during summer break we could definitely lend some of it to someone who needs it more. Be sure to take time to give back to your community because what goes around always comes back around! Check into local service projects your town might offer or go solo, volunteering at food banks, nursing homes and your local library.
Go on a road trip!!
Last but not least you can escape the bounds of small town life by packing up and taking off to your nearest city or vacation spot. Road trips are always exciting because you can make stops and enjoy what other citiesand towns have to offer. Either way I hope you enjoy your summer break wherever you are.
