Beat Summer Boredom

Take advantage of summer breaks while you can!

Summer break is a sweet, wonderful thing, but let’s face it, some of us can fall into a bit of a slump. All of a sudden you don’t have a class schedule to keep you on track and you have all of this newfound free time that you have no idea what to do with. Listen, I am fully aware that there are much worse problems, if you can even call this one, that people encounter. Luckily, there are many ways to remedy the inevitable summer boredom and also benefit yourself and others.

One great, and extremely profitable, way to keep busy during summer vacation is to pick up more hours at work. Many students have a part-time job during the year, or just for the summer. Why not make a few extra dollars? This way you can do more exciting things during your break because let’s be honest, almost everything costs money these days. Believe it or not, you can also save the money you earned so you don’t have to work so much during the school year. Working more also keeps you busy and gets you out of the house. It’s a win-win!

Another way to stay busy is to volunteer. It’s amazing how many places are looking for people who are willing to lend a few hours out of their week to help out. I think it is beneficial, when looking for somewhere to volunteer, to first realize the things that you are passionate about. Once you do this, there are websites that will match you up with places that correspond to your interests and who are looking for volunteers. How easy is that? Not only will volunteering help keep you busy, it can also help boost your confidence, and you can put it on a resume!

Get outside! It’s summer in Ohio and you know this beautiful weather doesn’t last forever. There are so many cool places to visit and fun outdoor activities to partake in. We are lucky to have so many parks, including the Metroparks, that allows us to enjoy nature even in the city. There are plenty of events to attend and you can even rent a kayak and other outdoor equipment. There is always the option to just have a nice a picnic or walk around as well.

Find a new hobby. I realize this may be easier said than done, but the important thing is to try new things! Who knows you may actually like one of them and turn it into a hobby. It can be as simple as reading, or something like knitting. I don’t know what you’re into, but just try something!

One long term goal that you can start tackling now is to start bettering yourself. This can be interpreted in many different ways and can be more of a personal thing. Summer vacation generally brings more free time that you can use to do things you may not have had time to during the school year. It can be hard to focus on anything besides the daily routine of class and studying during the year.

No matter what you do, I think it is important to use summer vacation to relax but to also work on yourself for the better. Every day you should do something that moves you a bit closer to your goal. This can be finding a job or an internship, or completing a few summer courses. Whatever you do, make sure you are bettering yourself, but also having fun. We won’t have summer breaks forever!

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
