Unpopular opinion: Football is boring.
Oops. Sorry to all of you that live and breathe football, that's awesome that you love it, but I personally don't see the appeal. Hence, I don't keep up with it regularly. Hence, I'm gonna be very lost at the Super Bowl party on Sunday. What do I do if I don't like football but I still wanna have a good time at the party? How am I going to pretend I know what's going on? How will I know who to cheer for and when to cheer? Keep scrolling for some tips that will answer these questions and help you survive through watching The Super Bowl for someone who doesn't watch football.
Prior to the game...
Tip 1: Do your homework.
You don't have to know the passing statistics of Tom Brady in 2011. However, you should at least know that he's a popularly known quarterback for the New England Patriots. So just do some basic research to learn a few main things about the teams playing. It also wouldn't hurt to make sure you at least know these key terms: touchdown, field goal, interception, kickoff, fumble, down, snap and end-zone.
Tip 2: Pick a team.
After doing your research, you should have some basic knowledge on the teams playing. So pick who you want to win! Whether you pick the Falcons simply because you like the color red, or you pick the Patriots because their wide receiver is uber cute, it's a good idea to designate "your" team for this game. This is also super important because you will be asked a bazillion times "Who are you rooting for?" and you wanna be able to stand firmly with your answer.
Tip 3: Dress the part.
Now that you've successfully done your homework and picked a team, you're ready to support your players. If you have some team apparel you could wear like a jersey, hat or even decorative socks, awesome, wear them! But if you don't have anything that actually says the team name, go for the colors. And if you're feeling really crazy, hit up that face paint.
During the game...
Tip 4: Find your allies
When you arrive at the Super Bowl party, there most likely will be a clear divide of teams. Find your allies and find your rivals. AKA find the people to look at when your team does something awesome to celebrate and then find the people to look at when your team does something awesome to torment.
Tip 5: Grab some liquid courage
Watching football and cheering on a team you're not too familiar with isn't the most comfortable thing in the world, so grab a cold one to loosen you up!
Tip 6: Follow your allies
Remember those friends you made at the beginning of the party that you bonded with over your mutual team? Well, they're going to be very helpful to you in these next few hours. When you hear them cheer, you cheer! When you see them throw their hands in the air out of disgust, you do the same!
Tip 7: Respect your fellow viewers
Even though you did some research on football, the teams, and the Super Bowl, this doesn't mean that you really know what you're talking about. Try to avoid getting in arguments with anyone over the game and make this a peaceful event!
Tip 8: Play games
If you're getting tired of watching everyone yell at the tv, take a break and go play some games. Some popular games for parties like these are cards, beer/water pong, bags and more. Maybe even do some light gambling about who you predict will win to make things interesting!
After the game...
Tip 9: Offer to help clean
Your host/hostess will not only totally appreciate the help but they'll remember to invite you back too!
Tip 10: Be a good sport
Even if your team loses, don't sweat it. If you followed these tips, you should have had a great time regardless of the ending scores! And hey, there's always next year, and you can do it all over again!
