While eyestrain usually won’t cause serious damage to your eye health, it can mean more serious issues are at work as well as being irritating or painful to deal with. Read on to learn how you can enjoy reading again without eye strain.

What is Eye Strain?

Eye Strain occurs when you intensely use your eyes. While reading is the most common method that brings it on, people can experience eye strain when doing other tasks as well, such as long-distance driving, air exposure directly to the eye, uncorrected vision or looking at screens. Signs someone is suffering from eye strain include:

  • Itchy, painful, burning or tired eyes
  • Watery or dry eyes
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Heavy eyes

Tips to Reduce Eyestrain

While there is no one-size-fits-all to reduce eyestrain for all people or alleviate it completely, there are several things you can regularly do to reduce the condition, including:

Reduce Screen Time

While we all used to read a physical book, many people have now switched to e-readers or apps. Staring at screens for hours on end can wreak havoc on the eyes, and it’s important to reduce screen time as much as possible. Look for ways to reduce time at the computer in the office and avoid spending hours on your Kindle or tablet after work.

Remember to Blink Often

One of the prime causes of eyestrain is that the eye dries out. When people look at something for a long time, they don’t blink as often, causing dry, irritated eyes. While reading, make sure you blink often to keep the eyes nice and moist.

Use a Bright Light

One of the most common ways people strain their eyes is by reading in a dimly lit area, especially before bed. Make sure your reading area is well lit with a light source behind you that shines directly on the book to reduce your eyestrain.

Remember the 20-20-20 Rule

This rule is simple; every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This allows your eyes to shift focus and readjust so you can get back to reading that great book without straining your eyes.

Correct Your Vision

If eyestrain is a persistent problem, consider blended LASIK to correct your vision. Blended LASIK allows you to reduce eyestrain incidents and your dependence on corrective lenses.

Reading a great book can provide hours of entertainment, but it can also cause eyestrain. While eyestrain is normal, persistent or severe eye strain may be a sign of an underlying condition. Consider Blended LASIK OKC to correct your eyesight and get back to reading without chronic eye strain sooner rather than later.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
