How An English Major Packs For College

Books are more important than clothes.

Packing up everything for college was time consuming enough, but once I got to my books it was emotionally taxing. It's amazing to me how attached I have become to stacks of paper. I always find it satisfying to see a full set of shelves looking back at me every morning and night. Once I got to my dorm, my roommate and I had to modify our desks and bring in a piece of wood so I was able to have the excessive amount of shelf space I wanted. Although my friends think I'm adorably insane, I know I can't be the only one whose college career, and/or entire life, is centered around books. So here is a list of mandatory items that I, as an English major, have found to be imperative for my school year.

1. Textbooks

This semester I have sixteen books for five classes. Did I rent any of them? No because almost all of them are actual books and, therefore, I will absolutely get emotionally attached to them.

2. Post-It Notes

Quotes, quotes, quotes!

3. Writing Utensils

Pencils for notes, pens for editing, highlighters for quoting.

4. Notebooks/Journals

Even though I usually freewrite on my computer, I have been compelled to own at least three journals with many, many blank pages. Why? Because they're cute, that's why.

5. Lights

Desk lamp, christmas lights, book light, flashlight......

6. Bookmarks

The perfect bookmark is one with a tassel that matches the color of the book cover, in my humble opinion. (I myself have eleven....)

7. Decor

Just to make your friends worry that you may have a problem.

8. Literary Apparel

To let the whole world know that you are cool without actually having to say it.

9. Book Bag

My specific purse requirements: small, crossbody, big enough to hold a book.

10. Goodreads Account

This is a great website that allows you to track what you've read and what you want to read. I got an account my freshman year of high school and I use it every time I finish a book or hear about a new one.

11. Books You Have Already Read

Because would your bookshelf really be the same without them?!

12. NEW BOOKS!

If you have a book obsession, you haven't reached the stage of acceptance until you pack at least ten books that you know you won't have time to read. (Because, hello, you have enough to read for class). Happy hoarding!!
