Encouragement For The Beginning Of The New Year

Don't give up on your resolutions.

For anyone struggling against the doubt they might face during the very beginning of the new year:

It's okay if you've already "failed" one or more of your resolutions. The only one that's keeping tabs is yourself. Don't give up on something you're trying to improve on within the next year. Keep giving yourself chances and keep hoping for improvement. A few bumps in the road don't matter enough to forgo your resolutions completely.

Don't let anyone tell you what to embrace and what to avoid. Wear what you want to. Say what you need to. If you feel like it's the right thing to do and you're not going to hurt yourself or others with poorly intended words, then do your own thing. Life is too short to listen to what-not-to-dos. Keep up whatever you're doing if you want to. Who cares if it isn't "trending"? You like it. That's enough.

We all look for advice from time to time because we just don't have everything figured out. But don't let anyone's words control you, whether they were intending to come off that way or not. Take concern and criticism, but don't take cruelty. And try not to take every single comment that comes your way in a very personal way. It might be about you specifically, but sometimes you're just around something else that may need to hear someone's words.

It doesn't matter what someone else might say if they learn what your resolutions are or what your current status with them might be. You're making an attempt. You're trying, so keep it up until you find an improved you. It might take all year, but the person that you were when you first made the resolution will be so grateful. It's all a process and it could be easy, but it be hard just the same. It could be quick, but it could take awhile as well. Just keep working at them and you'll be farther than you were before.

We made it this far. All the way through 2016 and now onto 2017. Many people have been looking forward to this year. It's your time. It's my time. It is everyone's time. And we all deserve the chance to allow ourselves a moment to adjust to change. We all deserve the chance to wear what we want without unnecessary judgement. We all deserve to stress about things that are more important than nasty words. We all deserve that moment we've realized we've screwed a resolution up, followed by the realization that it doesn't matter if we go through with it despite that mistake.

Don't give up on a year that holds so many opportunities and chances. Don't turn your back on the future you could possibly have. Let 2017 be yours.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
