Residential Advisors are really huge part of one's college life. They are always there to help you with whatever situation you are in, they know about everything happening on campus meaning they are a very good resource. They have probably been at the school longer so they know the ins and out, most RA's are really cool so go on get to know your RA better and make connections!
1. When a Resident calls the building a dorm.
We do way more than dorms do! Residential Advisors put on programs, check up on you, make you door decorations, show you around the school, help you with homework and projects. People who live in dorms do not have these luxuries. Thank you!
2. When residents mess with your floor decorations/door decorations/bulletin board.
Guys I am just trying to make our living space look decent/beautiful.
3. Feeling like you never make a difference in the lives of your residents.
You begin to ask yourself questions like "Do I really make a difference" or "Am I positively impacting my residents?"
4. When a resident walks up to you in class and tells you they need to fill out a work order for the broken light in their bathroom.
Dude, seriously? I am in class. I can't help you right now.
5. Getting residents to understand that you DO NOT WORK for FedEx or UPS.
No, guys, I am sorry I have no idea where the FedEx person is at this moment. I am not in contact with FedEx, UPS or USPS. I cannot track your package, but I am sure you will be receiving you package in due time.
6. When you plan a program and only five people show up, three of which are your fellow RA buddies!
Ouch.
7. Sleep Deprivation!
Yeah, it actually happens. Indeed college students sleep in the library! But then RAs are excused to do so.
8. When you are on-call and you get called at 2 a.m. to handle a situation.
You are extremely exhausted, but you wake up and go save the day or night!
9. When you Catch a resident with Alcohol
Dude come on! after all the effort I put into my bulletin board to educate you on the dangers of alcohol. Seriously!
10. When a resident acknowledges your effort.
Finally, I have done something good! Even with all the ups and downs, you still love your job and you are happy. You are grateful for your residents and everyone else on your staff, because at the end of the day, they become your family and best friends.
