Emotions Of An Adventure

Adventures are always incredible and the emotions that go along with them are wicked fun.

Emotions Of An Adventure

As summer comes upon us there are tons of people who will be spending many days hiking or going on various adventures. I love going on adventures; there is an incredible thrill that comes from being in nature. Every time I go out in nature I always find myself experiencing the same emotions in almost the same order. Initially I am full of anticipation, about halfway through the hike I am tired, at the summit I am empowered, and back at the base I am joyful.

The initial anticipation of an adventure is thrilling alone. Looking forward to the events that are going to unfold is one of my favorite parts of the day. The excitement building up to the climb, walk or hike always gets me amped. The fear of the unknown often creates a mood of wonderment and frenzied motivation. Not knowing exactly what is going to take place over the coming hours creates an incredible hullabaloo. As the adventure commences the anticipation quickly morphs into exhaustion.

The halfway mark of a hike always brings with it feelings of exhaustion. Regardless of the length, challenge or intensity of the adventure I always feel tired about halfway through. I wonder why I thought this would be a good idea. I then begin to dread coming back. The worst part is looking up to the summit of the mountain, the distance of the final destination, or the length of the cliff and thinking how much farther there is to go. I always dread the feeling of the halfway mark. Some people see it as motivating, to have made it halfway, I however see it as a source of weariness coupled with slight regret. Fortunately, the adventure is not over.

The next emotion is empowerment. Elation quickly replaces tiredness. When I reach the summit of a mountain I feel incredible. Looking out over the vast surroundings is a humbling experience. I am always reminded of how small and insignificant I am and how incredible our creator is. The beauty of the world around me takes my breath away and I am in awe. The exhilaration is enough motivation to take on the entire world. At the summit of a mountain problems seem smaller and willpower is the most incredible and unstoppable force.

The final emotion is joy. After the adventure concludes, I always think back to the events which just transpired. I think about the work I put forth and the pride I felt. I remember the smiles and laughs shared with friends, and I am thankful. I am thankful for each memory and know I will always treasure each one. I am filled with joy as I look back at the day. The sense of accomplishment and excitement are transformed into an overall feeling of contentment.

I never have regretted any day adventure in nature. A day spent outside exploring can affect the soul on an incomprehensible level. Take every opportunity this summer to experience life to the fullest degree. Make the most of every sunny day. By the time summer ends be able to look back and be filled with joy as you remember your summer of 2016.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
