Florence + the Machine is a phenomenal artist that has a variety of different songs with different meanings. The beauty of Florence Welch's voice is encapsulating and striking. Her ability to hit a spectrum of notes is unbelievable.
The beats and instrumentals to her songs are equally as interesting and aesthetically pleasing. Out of all of their songs, these are ones I plucked out that I think could be deemed their most emotional.
1. Heavy In Your Arms
When this song was first announced, Florence stated it's about the weight of love. This romantic piece can be heard in the movie Eclipse. Her voice causes me to feel the heaviness of the love in the movie's plot.
2. Seven Devils
Florence says that Ceremonials is an "ecstatic exorcism". It constantly reveals thoughts of self-doubt, guilt, pain, morals, and being sad; a huge battle of self-control.
3. Kiss With A Fist
This song may seem like it's about domestic abuse on the surface, but in reality, it's an imaginary chaos scenario Florence wrote about when she was 17. It's all metaphorical, but it's about a relationship that's very destructive that both characters enjoy. This is an emotional topic for many and this song reflects it.
4. What The Water Gave Me
According to genius.com, this song, in particular, is inspired by Virginia Woolf's suicide. She died by drowning when visiting a country house in 1941. A huge image that Florence discusses is going to a river with a pocketful of stones. This image is sung very clearly throughout the song. It's also influenced by the Lo que el agua me dio painting by Frida Kahlo.5. Never Let You Go
"Never Let You Go" by Florence + The Machine is a song about surrender in regards to giving in, an act of devotion. The narrator is surrendering to passion and/or desire and doesn't ever want to be let go, regardless of what other people think.
6. Ship To Wreck
"Ship To Wreck" was written about breaking the things you love the most. It's easy to be self-destructive and sometimes things are made to be broken, destroyed, ended, etc. This song is a reflection of that and I think this is something we as humans do far too often. This is definitely a song people can relate to.
