Emmy Rossum, aka Fiona Gallagher, stole our hearts on the hit Showtime series, 'Shameless'. After nine long, glorious seasons, Rossum has thrown down the towel, and announced via Facebook that she will be quitting the show, leaving the rest of us wondering what's going to happen to our fave family.
This is a problem, because without her, the show is literally non-existent.
Try as you will, Showtime, but here's 8 reasons why 'Shameless' will be total crap without Fiona:
She is the glue that holds the Gallaghers together
Let's face it...regardless of your stance on Fiona, the series revolves around her. Episode 1 literally revolves around her relationship with Jimmy (Steve?), and from there, the story evolves around mayhem that followed her. Of course, the Gallagher siblings is the entirety of the series, but without Fiona, there would be little-to-no drama.
Fiona was the obvious 'matriarch' of the family
Where was the actual Gallagher matriarch Monica throughout the series? Getting high and ruining her life wheel giving no regards to her children (RIP Monica). Fiona stepped up, and took care of her family, including Frank, and made sure they were protected throughout the entire 9 seasons, which to me, is completely badass. I mean, for God sake...she fought to become her siblings legal guardian at such a young age! Without Fiona, who will take care of the Gallagher household?
Lets talk about Fiona's juicy romances
There was Jimmy...and Gus....and Sean...and plenty of one night stands that give the story so much more juicy drama! Yes, we all live for Lip's brooding romances, and Ian's hunky boy-toys, but come on! Fiona's romances always gave the story a little extra something that each episode needed.
She made mistakes that served as life lessons for her fam bam
Fiona may have gotten her life "together" (I say that very lightly" in the later seasons...but remember Liam's coke incident? Or her promiscuous phase? How she wanted to be more "selfish" and do her own thing after Jimmy and even Sean? Yeah, those little lessons served great to her family, because for some reason, Lip, Ian, Debby, and Carl all turned out somewhat successful in the later years.
What about V's and her friendship?
Veronica and Fiona started the series in such a close knit friendship, and irregardless of their falling out in the later seasons, they still were the hallmark to what a "sister from another mister" should've looked like. The show gave me faith that the V to my Fiona was out there somewhere, and without Fiona, V is left for dead (aka, Svetlana).
There's no hope for Liam
Liam is by far the smartest Gallagher (sorry Lip), and without Fiona's guidance, who is going to lead him down a semi-normal path? Frank? That's a joke. Lip or Ian? They have their own lives to figure out. Liam has been under the influence of Frank, and without Fiona to protect him, he will go down the same path as the rest of the Gallagher crew.
The show will be missing a whole section revolving around her storyline
What about her apartments? Her future with Ford? Her new budding friendship with Nessa? There's a whole story plot that still needs to be resolved, probably in Season 9, but it's still going to annoy us! (Unless they kill her off...if they do that, they're just desperate).
She's an obvious fan favorite
You either love her or hate her; regardless, she is a fan favorite nonetheless. She is a badass woman, who works for her family, and even if her attitude sucks a lot of the time, she does what she has to. She's admirable, fierce, and street smart, and without her in Shameless, there will be a void missing.
To be honest, Fiona is definitely not my favorite character- she isn't even my second or third fave, but her fierce attitude, admirable work ethic, and slutty one night stands with questionable bad boys will always have a place in my heart. Without her and her dramatic story plots, 'Shameless' will never be the same. As an actress, I respect Emmy Rossum for pursuing other work, or quitting due to unfair pay rates (if Showtime really didn't pay her as much as William H. Macy-aka Frank Gallagher), she did a remarkable job playing the wild child Fiona Gallagher, and as much as we love the series...we might as well call it quits at the end of this upcoming season.
