Embracing The Unknown

The fact of the matter is, I don’t think I will ever be ready to step into the unknown.

It’s pretty safe to say that, more often than not, the unknown puts a little bit of fear into all of us. We all are anxious to know what comes next in whatever situation.

I am a few weeks away from starting my senior year of college and I’m learning that there are a lot of questions about this next season of life that I don’t have the answers to.

What are you going to do after you graduate? Well, I’m thinking about grad school.

Oh, where are you going to go to grad school? I have a couple places in mind, but we’ll see if/when I hopefully get accepted.

So what are you going to do if that doesn’t work out? Good question.

It really hit me a few weeks ago that this next year is going to be filled with a lot of lasts, and a whole lot of “I don’t know what’s coming next.” It is evident that I am going to be stepping into the unknown very soon and I don't feel ready.

The fact of the matter is, I don’t think I will ever be ready to step into the unknown. But God calls us into these situations all the time. I’m learning to embrace and to trust Him through every step.

The waiting isn’t always easy, and while it is OK to think about what is coming next (and we should), it is also important to be present where I am, to be still in the midst of waiting and to be reminded that there is purpose in each and every day.

As I prepare to navigate through senior year and whatever comes next, I know I will need these reminders often: to trust, to embrace to be present. I want to encourage you to do the same. Trust in His faithfulness, embrace the waiting and be present in what He has for you today.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6, ESV

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
