Be Different

Everyone's a little weird.

Be Different

Everyone has habits other people would consider weird. My friends think I'm one of the weirdest people they know when they learn about some of my habits.

1. I can't touch the bottom of a sauce cup, so I use several sauces.

2. I can't stand chipped nail polish, so I constantly repaint them.

3. It drives me crazy when my shoes don't match my shirt.

4. It also drives me crazy when jewelry doesn't match an outfit.

5. I feel naked without earrings on.

6. The tags on my blankets MUST be at my feet!

7. While eating, I start with the sides and go clockwise around my plate, taking a drink before I eat something different.

And the list continues...

My point is, everyone has weird habits about them. That's the great thing about life, though. We're all different. What i, everyone was the same? This world be so boring and dull. Embrace your differences. Enjoy the fact that your hair isn't the same as the person sitting 10 feet away from you. Your clothes aren't the same as everyone else you see at work or on campus. We all have different tastes.

It always makes me so sad to see people trying to "fit in" or conform to peer pressure. This is the problem with society these days. As a child or teenager, people are so pressured to look and act a certain way. They should have certain clothes and wear makeup. They get ridiculed for wanting to be different and not wanting or being able to look how they "should."

However, we focus so much on young girls that we never stop and think about how boys are affected by these things, too. They have to be good at sports and be up to date on whatever style their peers are wearing, even hairstyles and fads. They are pressured to be able to lift a certain amount of weight and know everything about whatever the sports topic is. Where I'm from, they even have to know about every vehicle and engine under the sun. Men have a reputation of trying to out-drink one another. It's so irritating to hear the ridicule when they say they don't want to drink that night.

Most of us give our friends crap about things, and we all know it's a joke. But there is a huge difference between joking and peer-pressuring someone. I never thought this happened where I came from until I took a step back one day. I was sitting in a college class listening to someone tell a story about being bullied. In discussion, I said bullying didn't happen in my school. Then, they made me think. This was a subject brought to my attention that spoke volumes to me.

So, be different. Do what you want and like whatever you want to like. One day, you'll be proud of all the weird things you do and what makes you different from everyone else.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
