Embrace Your Assets

Forget what Sir Mix-A-Lot said, we like ALL butts.

Just about 40 years ago, our modeling industry was overruled by skinny, tall women. These women gave an inaccurate representation of the natural look of women in society. Most models looked anorexic, unhealthy, and unrealistic. Models also began to influence women to embrace an impossible look, as some would resort to starving themselves and developing eating disorders. Men became obsessed with the look as well. They desired a skinny woman with long legs, just like they would see in the magazines. The modeling industry did not celebrate the different body types found among women.

However, our society has branched out and begun to set a new trend. Nowadays, big beautiful women are "in" and skinny tall women are "out." Social media has played a significant role in this change of trends. Women are constantly finding themselves doing squat workouts to have a big booty and men lust over the idea of women with big curves. So, what happened? Why the sudden change of heart, world?

Maybe we have Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, and Amber Rose to thank. They all have changed the game when it comes to having big butts, with some of them even getting implants to emphasize this trait. Or maybe we should thank the rappers of today’s music industry. Nobody has ever written a song about small butts. Rappers, including Drake, Future, and Kanye, love to encourage twerking and big butts. I mean, how we could forget Drake’s unforgettable line, “I like my girls BBW. So thick that everyone else in the room is so uncomfortable.” I do not know about you, but I would have hated being in that room.

Regardless of who’s to blame, having a big butt is as unrealistic as the skinny tall women the world was obsessing over not too long ago. Women continue to embrace impossible looks dictated by women whose butts are not even real. Stop these “booty goals” and “squat life” hashtags. You do not want it. Trust me, having a big butt is not all that.

Do not get me wrong. I love my curves. However, big butts are a struggle and I cannot lie. Big butts have become overly sexualized in the media. People no longer appreciate the curves of a woman, instead, they exploit it.

Shopping is painful for big women. Even though society has begun to embrace bigger women, clothing lines have yet to cater to plus size women. Buying jeans and dresses is a constant struggle.

People also think they can just touch your butt without even asking because it is bigger than average. Men just assume they can have sex with you, instead of thinking “maybe her conversation is thicker than she is.” There is also this misconception that big butts do not have stretch marks or cellulite, but, for some, those come along with the booty too.

Women have to understand that, when it comes to big butts, you either got it or you don’t. Most of it is genetics anyway. Do not feed into the media’s definition of beauty. Whether you are tall and skinny or voluptuous and short, celebrate your own body and own it. Each body type comes with its own advantages and disadvantages, but that is the beauty of it all. Love yourself and let all types of women be in season all year long.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
