Ellen's Stand On The Travel Ban

The Ellen Show-Ellentube

The Ellen Show stars Ellen DeGeneres. Ellen is very famous and is known for numerous things. Whether she is trying to explain how to play Heads Up or simply talking to celebrities on her show, she manages to find a way to touch your heart while making you laugh. On a recent episode of The Ellen Show, she spoke about Donald Trump's travel ban (you can watch that here). Being Ellen, she did not explain it how you usually would talk about a travel ban.

Ellen begins to talk about how Donald Trump banned people from seven countries from entering the United States. His ban was not to prohibit only those without green cards, but those who have green cards were also included in this ban. She states how she was not going to talk about it but instead she spoke about her recent movie, Finding Dory.

She describes how Dory is a fish who lives in Australia. Her and her parents are from America. She then points out how her father sounded Jewish but religion does not matter. You can say that she was hinting at how it does not matter who you are or what your background is. All that matters is that you are a human being and have rights. Ellen then goes into how Dory winds up alone behind the Marine Institute, which is a wall that separates the Institute from the ocean water. Plot twist: Dory was separated after trying to find her parents with Marlin and Nemo.

Ellen then states that after Dory got into America, she was separated from her parents. Though both parties are in America and separated, however, Dory found friends to help her. The friends tried to help Dory find where she last saw her parents while Marlin and Nemo's friends tried to help locate Dory. These friends included sea otters, an octopus, Crush, and Squirt. Ellen explains how the friends did not care about the differences between them, they only cared about Dory. They wanted to help her find her parents. She reminds her viewers how if you see someone in need, you are supposed to just help them rather than judge who they are. We need to keep this in mind, whether the situation deals with politics or your average day to day activities.

I loved watching this because it was short in time yet powerful. She did not directly attack the travel ban like most of us would but instead, she related it to a movie most families have seen. I encourage everyone to watch this clip and see how amazing Ellen truly is. Ellen, in my opinion, is a role model. She always ends her shows by saying "be kind to one another" and that is what we should do.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
