You may or may not have seen the hubbub, depending on how hard you’re looking, surrounding the fact that this Friday actress Ellen Page ("Juno," "Inception") went head-to-head with Senator and GOP candidate Ted Cruz on the issue of gay rights. The encounter occurred at the Iowa State Fair, an annual and internationally known fair that takes place in Des Moines every August.
As Cruz has begun the process of campaigning in these past weeks, he has come through very strongly on the issues of religious freedom law, a stance he takes as inspired by his devout Christian beliefs. Cruz was elected in 2012 and is the first Hispanic or Cuban American to serve as a U.S. Senator representing Texas. Page, an actress known for the critically acclaimed film "Juno," came out as a gay woman in February of 2014 in a speech for the Human Right Campaign's "Time to Thrive" and is an advocate for the LGBT community.
While Cruz was grilling pork chops for the State Fair, Page shot questions at him regarding LGBTQA+ rights and the fact that the recent push for religious freedom laws shows potential for discrimination of LGBT people. In wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling that same-sex marriage is a constitutional right, Cruz believes that, as a result of the ruling, Christians are being persecuted. During the nearly five minute-long conversation both sides were relatively respectful, with Page asking pointed questions and Cruz rallying back according to his beliefs, and reiterating his stance on Christian persecution.
Page brought up the point that LGBT people can legally be fired based purely on that fact that they are a part of the LGBT community. Cruz’s arguments went back to his religious beliefs in defense of religious liberty.
The video is worth a watch through to the end.
