People often say that Ellen DeGeneres would be a wonderful President or Vice President of the United States. I strongly agree with this. Having such a positive, strong, and accepting face would be beneficial for the White House.

This week, Ellen did visit the White House... Not to start her campaign we've all been waiting for her to launch, but for something just as important and special. This past Tuesday, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, an emotional award reflecting her amazing career as a comedian, actress, humanitarian, and advocate for LGBT rights. The award is also the highest civilian award given out by the President.

President Obama said in his speech that DeGeneres has greatly helped "push our country in the direction of justice," and spoke of how brave she was to come out of her sexuality 20 years ago to the public, in hopes that she could help others going through the same struggles as her. President Obama concluded that Ellen "inspires us to better, one joke, one dance at a time."

Ellen ends every talk show with the words, "Be kind to one another," wrapping up every hilarious and fun show with something her viewers can take away from. There are so many deserving people and celebrities in this country, but Ellen's good deeds and large heart definitely deserved this award for her ability to bring joy to people's everyday lives, and being such a courageous role model for the LGBT community.

So, congratulations to a wonderful person, a person we can learn from to help make the country and world a better, and more accepting place.

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
