I can imagine that almost all of us second-semester college students would jump at the opportunity to go back to elementary school, even just for a few hours. We could shamelessly drink three Capri Sun’s (just as long as mom didn’t catch you) and watch hours of "Arthur" on end without having to worry about this unknown concept of “studying.”
Collaborating with some of my equally-reminiscent friends, we came up with a list of the top things we miss from elementary school.1. Field Trips
It was a time when field trips weren’t accompanied by extensive post-trip assignments. What a beautiful, beautiful time.
2. Scholastic Book Fairs
From "Amelia Bedelia" to "Magic Tree House" to "Captain Underpants," the Scholastic Book Fairs were, hands down, the best days of the school year.
3. Class Holiday Parties
We never missed an opportunity to bring in holiday treats and put together those styrofoam crafts that only our parents could love. Not to mention the extra love on Valentine’s Day when everyone was forced to give you a valentine (thankfully).
4. Recess
I personally liked the days when recess was moved inside so I could read, but for those who were more outgoing than little elementary school me, I can see the appeal of those crazy jungle gyms.
5. Oregon Trail
I don’t think we ever made it to Oregon successfully, but none of us were willing to back down from the challenge that was the Oregon Trail.
6. Naps
Oh the beauty of having naps built into our every day class schedule.
7. Science Fairs
As much as we may have hated having to explain every single aspect of the Scientific Method, us nerds have to admit we all secretly loved the science fair.
8. This TV
Bill Nye the Science Guy, Magic School Bus and Schoolhouse Rock taught me some of the most important lessons of elementary school, including the function of conjunctions (which is, in fact, hooking up words, phrases and clauses).
9. Doughnuts
When you came into class sleepy-eyed and not ready to pay attention, the best surprise was when a classmate brought in this sugary treat. Who doesn't love Krispy Kreme?
10. Having a substitute
This was the best thing about walking in the door, finding out your teacher was sick for the day. Yes, maybe you really loved your second-grade teacher, but having someone new teach you for the day was a fun surprise.
