In memory of a beautiful and strong member of my step-family who has recently passed, here is an elegy for Nonny–a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to the entire family.
The smell of homemade meatballs lingers in the air,
Reflecting a true Italian home.
Remnants of papery garlic skin litter the counter
Next to a fishnet bag from the market.
With a stove and a will as strong as God,
It was evident that the best cuisine was about to be made.
As everyone gathers around the table, wine in hand,
We toast to the family, especially you.
Engraved in our hearts and minds like a tattoo,
This is a thank you for your wisdom and the laughs
As well as the lessons you've taught
That we'll pass on forever.
One hundred and one has never looked so well,
We'll never forget you, Brooklyn belle.
