As a first time presidential election voter – I feel cheated.
Unfortunately, I think a lot of my generational cohorts feel the same. This election cycle is unlike any in history. There are a few major things happening, (1) the first woman could potentially become president, (2) we could see a huge shift in the Supreme Court that could potentially effect our nation for generations to come. Our nation is changing rapidly. LGBTQ+ people have more rights than ever before, but the black community is in danger every day, and we are so busy paying attention to the presidential election and whether or not a candidate will be indicted and haven't bothered to notice until right now that our country is trying to build a massive pipeline on a sacred Indian reservation. And you know what’s the worst part about this election? The fact that all anyone can talk about is sexual harassment allegations and compromised emails.
Never before have we ever as a nation come down to picking “the lesser of two evils.” The phrase was casually thrown around in the 2012 election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, but the term is personified into something so new and so extreme now.
As a woman, I should side with Hillary Clinton, but as a republican I should side with Donald Trump. So why is it that I was physically almost in tears at the polls? Well, because the candidates suck.
This would've been a different story if my generation would've been able to vote four years ago, I don't feel that we would feel as disadvantaged as we do now.
Yes, past candidates in presidential elections have been called the worst of names, but when was the last time (before this election) that a presidential candidate was literally compared to the devil?
I just want to say that I'm sorry to my generation, although I am in the middle of it, for the tough time we're having at our first presidential election. We shouldn't be subjected to picking the lesser of two evils. We shouldn't have to poll who the voters trust more, because both candidates seem extremely untrustworthy. I'm sorry to my generation, because the odds of this election were never in our favor from the beginning.
