Everyone knows who Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are but, public knowledge dwindles when you start talking about other third party candidates. Not many can say they’ve heard of Evan McMullin, another independent party candidate that is feeding off the dislike of Clinton and especially “Never-Trumpers”, who identify as Republicans but refuse to vote for controversial Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.
Born in Provo, Utah, McMullin would be the youngest presidential candidate at 40 years old. He began his campaign on August 8th which in most states is too late to register to be on the ballot causing him to miss key states. The McMullin campaign doesn’t expect to win with the magic 270 electoral votes to win the presidency. He hopes to deny both Clinton and Trump the electoral votes and throw the election into congress, allowing the Republican held senate to vote on the next president. In that outcome, the person most likely to become president would be Evan McMullin.
Shockingly, he may only need to win one state. Utah, a heavily Mormon state, shifted support from Trump to the new candidate McMullin who is also a mormon. Current polling has Trump at 30%, McMullin at 29%, and Clinton at 28%. McMullin is within striking distance of taking the lead and being the first third party candidate to win an electoral vote since 1968. If the race is close enough between Trump and Clinton, McMullin may save this election between the two most disliked candidates of all time.
