Election 2016: An Analysis

November 8th has come and gone, but it will have some lasting impacts. For better or worse, we have a new President. As two political science majors, both with differing viewpoints, we have decided to take a look at the now infamous election night and try to piece together what happened and what will happen.

So, what happened?

We both agree that we didn't expect Donald Trump to become president. As two moderates, one on the liberal side and the other on the conservative side, we both expected Hillary Clinton to become the 45th President of the United States. We both agree that she is a qualified individual, and we knew that she appealed to moderate voters.

As political scientists, we had also studied polls and listened to pundits. Both claimed that Clinton was a surefire victor.

However, she lost.

A lot of it had to do with the fact that people did not turn up in the states that mattered. Those who had thought that Clinton was sure to win and was a supporter of her probably believed that she would win anyways because of the polls and the media, so there was no point in voting for her to them.

There was also the issue of the Clinton's campaign heavy reliance on minorities, cities, and assuredness of the blue belt states in the northeast. Little did they know that Trump's message was permeating those areas.

What now?

Now, we have two months left of an Obama presidency. We will see what he manages to do in his "lame duck" period.

In terms of Trump? Well, we have to wait a little bit longer for that.

We can watch what he does in the meantime.

What will he look like as the President? Only time can tell. He has a lot of work to do in uniting the GOP. He is fortunate enough to have a Republican Congress to work with.

It'll take some time to heal the wounds in the party, and it'll take even more time for people to truly be okay with this election.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
