Eight Things Merrimack Freshmen Need To Know

Most of us know what it's like to be a freshman and how tough it was to try and learn the ropes within the first month of moving into school. We wanted to be caught up with the latest gossip and learn everything there is to know about Merrimack College as soon as possible.

Every college has traditions and quirks that make it unique, so here are some tips and information you should know before school starts.

1. Den Debbie gets the last word. Always.

You may not know what she looks like now, but I promise you'll know who she is the second you see her. She's probably the greatest person you'll ever encounter, and she loves striking up a conversation, but you'll NEVER get the last word in with her. Let's just say we've tried to make it a competition.

2. Your Den money will go A LOT faster than you anticipate.

Mozzarella sticks, chicken tender wraps, curly fries — they're all just so good. Especially on the weekends. You'll think you have more Den money than you actually do, and before you know it, it's gone. Use it wisely.

3. Lunch at noon in Sparky's is equivalent to the Hunger Games. Literally.

The line for lunch at noon is absurd and most of the time there aren't any seats. I suggest getting there early or waiting a little bit to avoid the rush.

4. I Tower is the best spot on the weekends. But not really.

Yes, the apartments are "the place to go" on the weekends, but don't let us upperclassmen fool you. Take a tour of the apartments and try to find I Tower. I heard they have pool parties ...

5. It's a small school. Word gets around FAST — get used to it.

Enough said.

6. Get involved. It'll make your experience THAT much better.

There are so many advantages of being involved on campus. You meet tons of new people, and you will have so much fun. Don't spread yourself too thin, but get as involved as you can!

7. Have a back-up coffee plan. Trying to go to Dunks before class is almost as bad as the Sparky's lunch line.

We are all SO HAPPY that there's a Dunks on campus, but we go there often enough and sometimes the line wraps around. Waiting in line takes forever some days, and you'll never make it to class on time if you try going five to 10 minutes before. Coffee, for most of us, is a necessity in college, so figure it out.

8. Get ready to have the best four years of your life. Merrimack is your new home.

Enjoy it. Time goes by WAY too fast.

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
