Eight Things Every College Student Misses About Home

We all know that being away at college and "leaving the nest" is great. It's a freedom like no other. Being responsible for only yourself and not answering to anyone else are some of the greatest pleasures about college, but we may get a little homesick every now and then. Here are the things college students miss most about home:

1. Family

Don't deny it, we all miss our families. You don't have to act all tough and pretend that you don't miss your mom...you do. When you're home with family, you don't have to impress them or worry about judgement from them. They're your family; they have to love you and support you no matter what.

2. A Home Cooked Meal

Don't get me wrong, Easy Mac is delicious, but sometimes it takes a little bit more than a can of pasta and processed cheese powder to do the trick. A nice, Chicken Vesuvio right out of the oven (without waiting 20 minutes in line at the dining hall) is oh, so satisfying.

3. Pets

There's no greater feeling than coming home and having your dog get all excited to see you. I'll admit that sometimes I FaceTime my dog. No shame. Everywhere I turn, I see pictures on social media of college students missing their dogs, cats, fish, etc. Pets are a HUGE plus to coming home and college students are lying if they say they don't miss their pets.

4. Your Bed

This is a no brainer. Sleeping in the comfort of your own bed (without your roommate 6 feet away) almost guarantees a better night's sleep.

5. Driving

Public transportation is a wonderful service offered to students, but sometimes, if you feel like going to the mall, it shouldn't have to be a big ordeal. You shouldn't always have to check the bus app and stand outside 10 minutes before it comes only to realize it's not in service and have to re-evaluate your life. At home, you can hop in the car and hit the mall whenever you please.

6. Radio

Since most college students aren't driving around, the closest thing we hear to new music is visitors blasting rap music, which is not everyone's cup of tea.

7. Your Own Shower

Being home, it's comforting to know that we don't have to worry about contracting a foot fungal disease in the shower. The water temperature and pressure is just right, and not having to wear shower shoes is such a blessing.

8. Being Nursed When You're Sick

Instead of popping cough drops like they're candy, its nice to have mom and dad take care of us when we're sick. They wait on us hand and foot, whether it's making us hot tea or soup and they make sure that we get enough sleep. When we leave the nest and come back, mom and dad want to do everything for us, because they know we've had it rough. Therefore, our wish is their command.

College is a great experience and there are so many things that make it so great. But it's okay to miss home sometimes too.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
