Growing up, people always told me that caffeine is dangerous and can damage your body. That caffeine should not be consumed excessively. But the fact is that caffeine can actually be good for your body, providing health benefits and energy. There are some negative effects, but there are many more positive ones.

There are some negative effects caused by too much caffeine. According to the Mayo Clinic, consuming 500-600 mg of caffeine in a day could cause insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, an upset stomach and even muscle tremors. Caffeine can be a source of addiction. When consumed less than usual it can become an issue of withdrawal. Withdrawal can cause headache, fatigue, drowsiness, depression, irritability, nausea and vomiting. Caffeine can also cause cold hands, muscles tensing up and increased heartbeat. It causes anxiety, increased blood pressure, reduced control of motor movements and increased urination. Consuming too much coffee can be a dangerous mistake for the body. Consuming 12 or more cups of coffee can cause jitters, rapid heartbeat, nausea, anxiety attacks, heart palpitations, insomnia, sweating, dizziness, vomiting and cardiac arrest.

Even though caffeine can have many bad effects on the body, it also has many positive ones. Caffeine is a natural stimulant that activates the central nervous system and fights tiredness and improves concentration and focus. Medical News Today suggests that drinking three cups of coffee a day could reduce the risk of liver cancer by 50 percent. Another study suggests that four cups a day could half the risk of mouth and throat cancer. A study from the Harvard School of Public Health suggests that drinking between two and four cups of coffee may reduce suicide risks in adults, while recent research claims that consuming 200 mg of caffeine can boost long-term memory. Other studies suggest that caffeine may protect against type 2 diabetes. Caffeine can also cause alertness, feelings of excitement and clear sinuses. Caffeine also causes lower risk of cardiovascular disease. It also increases the metabolic rate.

Coffee can be a great resource to help college students, but is also good for your health. As noted, caffeine could be a way to reduce the risk of liver, mouth and throat cancer. It could reduce the risk of suicide and boost long-term memory. Coffee can be good for your health, but only in moderation.
