If you're like me, a good breakup song is a solid staple in your Spotify playlist. Even if you're not currently going through or getting over a breakup, there's something really liberating about screaming your goodbyes to all the guys who screwed you over, past, present, and future alike.
While my go to songs are usually Taylor Swift's "All Too Well" when I need to cry it out and Lizzo's "Truth Hurts" when I need to proclaim my bad-assery to the world, "Glad He's Gone" is the breakup masterpiece that I didn't know I needed until I heard it.
Tove Lo's song is neither sappy nor salty, but has a different vibe from the others. Throughout the entire set of lyrics, the singer radiates a "drunk girl in the bathroom of the club" energy, the kind that we all need once in a while. She sings, "Never no tears for that sucker…dancing all night, get guys' numbers." You're so much more than an extension of your crappy ex! Now that he's gone, you're free to mingle as you please, and you're better for it.
By the second verse, Tove Lo is a close personal friend, and nobody knows you like your friends do. In the music video, Tove Lo is shown crossing deserts, jungles, oceans, tundras (you name it) to reach her friend as she consoles her over the phone. Through her lyrics, she basically does the same thing for listeners. She sings, "Bitch, I love you, he never loved you. He never saw the pretty things in you that I do." If he treated you badly, he obviously didn't see the gem that you are. Stick with the people who know you from the inside out and don't take your beauty for granted.
If you're having trouble accurately describing the crap your ex put you through, Tove Lo has got you covered: "Cover the basics, it's pretty easy. He's a bitch with some expectations." Yeah, we know the type. The kind of guy who takes all your time and gives none back? The guy who expects you to try for him but makes no effort for you? If that's the case, then "you know it's time to let go."
If you couldn't "show him all your crazy," if he made you cry, if you felt like you were never enough as you were, you don't need him in your life. As Tove Lo put it, "you're better off, I'm glad that he's gone."
