I love being an education major, however, many people like to butt in and try to discount the field that I'm passionate about. They question the validity of what we're pursuing and most of the time, it leaves us ed majors feeling super frustrated. Here are 7 things all education majors are tired of hearing:
1. "Are you sure?"
Yes, we are. If we are already paying for college under the education major, I doubt we'll change our minds. Most of us have been wanting to be teachers for a while. I, personally, have been wanting to since I was 8 years old. I don't think I'll want to change my mind after almost 12 years.
2. "You won't make any money, you know!"
We will, though. Where there are jobs, there is money. Nobody is working for free! So yeah, money will be made.
3. "You won't want to have any kids after working with them for x hours a day!"
Odds are, we already like kids. If not, why would we dedicate so much time and money on learning how to become a teacher?
4. "Why??"
Why? We like kids, we want to see them learn, we like knowing we are the reason they learned something, we like working with young people, and we (most likely) have a good relationship with our past teachers, so we'd enjoy the same with our future students.
5. "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach"
Okay, but, who taught me? Who taught you? Who's going to teach them? Everyone can do, especially teachers. After all, they make all other careers possible.
6. "Teaching is easy, though. Why not do something more challenging?"
It isn't rocket science, we know. But, have you ever worked with young people? Have you ever talked to them about life, helped them with situations you've never personally dealt with? Had kids that didn't understand something no matter what, so you changed your approach entirely? I'd say that is pretty challenging.
7. "Good luck."
Thanks! If my students are anything like you in the future, I'll need it!
