Everytime someone asks me what kind of music I like, I immediately go blank. It seems as though I'm incapable of providing a clear answer, so I usually say something along the lines of, "I like a little bit of everything!" It's the truth, and it's simple, yet it's unacceptable almost every time I've said it. Perhaps, people expect me to lean more towards a certain genre or a certain artist, but very simply, it depends a lot on the mood.
For example, there's the ultimate car driving playlist that I play whenever my friends and I drive around our sleepy college town. Usually, the playlist includes a lot of Arctic Monkeys, Blackbear, Tame Impala, and Taylor Swift. First, comes the excitement of leaving our dorms as anticipation builds to roam around for endless miles. Arctic Monkeys and Blackbear help build up the hype, but then there's the middle. We've been cruising along, but we know we have to be back in an hour, so then we play Tame Impala-- the kind of music that lets calms us down, but lets us know we're about to have fun. Finally, there's the end of the drive, the part where we circle back to our dorms, knowing we can no longer avoid our responsibilities. We want to make this car ride memorable; we want to be able to sing along to the lyrics, so we play some Taylor Swift songs, naturally. It's the end, sure, but we know we have to make it count, and end our car ride on a high note.
However, then there's the playlist that I play when I'm trying to concentrate or complete homework. Usually, this playlist includes a lot of Beach House and Lana Del Rey that really puts me in the right frame of mind to complete assignments. The melodies are evanescent; I don't have to pay much attention to the lyrics. Everything comes together.
Overall, maybe the whole question of what kind of music someone likes should be avoided altogether. Perhaps, it would be better to focus on the mood or instances that govern people to listen to certain types of music.
