Music is a big part of my life. I'm not so artistically inclined that I can sing or play some kind of instrument, but I've always enjoyed listening to my favorite genres, discovering new artists, and going to as many concerts as I can. Like many other things in this world, it has the power to bring people together and allows us to feel certain ways. Music festivals are part of the shared experience of music. While there are many great music festivals in the U.S. and all around the world, I am absolutely excited for one particular festival: Eaux Claires.
Growing up in Milwaukee, I've been lucky enough to experience Summerfest plenty of times. It's a really great music festival and I hope I can explore more festivals like it in the future. The reason I am excited about Eaux Claires, however is because I feel that it's going to be unlike any other concert or festival I've experienced.
Eaux Claires is a very new festival. This summer is going to be only it's second year in existence. Yet good words about it have spread all over the country. It was created by artist Justin Vernon of the band Bon Iver, and it happens to take place right in his hometown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, hence the festival's name. In it's first run this last summer, I was a little apprehensive of going just because it was such a new thing. I didn't know what bands were going to be there and I didn't know if I would like any of them. But after hearing so many good things about it, I decided I couldn't pass up another year, and my friend and I bought tickets as soon as they went on sale.
The reason I'm so excited for it this year is the reason I was questioning going last year; there aren't going to be bands I know or like performing there. I used to be so worried about that at other concerts and festivals. I would be so set on seeing one band or artist and wait endless hours just to see them alone. If this is what people want to do, I'm all for it. It shows your dedication to your favorite band, and in many cases it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. But Eaux Claires is unique in that it's not solely about the names of really famous and well known artists. It gives lesser known bands or rising stars a chance to show the world what they can do and put on a really great show. It's not about waiting forever to see one band play some songs. It's about going to the festival and taking it all in. The music, the food, the people, the overall atmosphere.
Eaux Claires is about not just the music, but the experience. I'm so excited to attend and see what it's really all about. I'm excited to see some popular artists play, like Bon Iver of course, but also see and get inspired by new bands and artists. I'm sure in a few years time, Eaux Claires will make a name for itself and be the festival that everyone is talking about.
