Eating Healthy In The Dining Hall: Breakfast Edition

It's 8 am, skip the donut and grab some fruit. You'll thank me later.

After eating in the Hickey Dining Hall for 6 semesters straight I learned two things, one being that the endless French fries are bomb and two being there are a lot more healthy options than you think...

So I'm going to write this meal by meal because I feel like there is a lot to say for each.

For breakfast the Hickey always has oatmeal which is super good for you. It's loaded with antioxidants and nutrients and fiber to keep you full till lunch. They have cranberries available sometimes you can throw in for some flavor, or a small bit of the born sugar they leave out. When I was at Army Camp this summer we ate ours plain but if I had to choose how to dress it up I would cut up the granny smith apples they have, maybe throw in some grapes and a spoonful of chocolate chips. (That part isn't good but I have a horrible addiction to chocolate.)

But if oatmeal isn't your style, they brought some healthier cereals into the dining hall. My go to is the Special K Red Berries. A bowl of this is less than 250 calories if portioned correctly. This cereal also contains fiber that will keep you full for a while and get your digestive system moving.

There is also the yogurt and fruit they have everyday. They always have plain or vanilla yogurt and a lot of the time they have strawberry or whipped blueberry. The fruit definitely needs a little more variety but you can throw in your melon and honeydew into some vanilla yogurt and top on a spoonful of granola and there you have it. DIY parfait. You can also throw in chocolate chips with the strawberry yogurt if you have a sweet tooth start at 7 am like I do. Or dice up some pears and apples and dip it in the blueberry yogurt.

Lastly, you can't forget about the MTO omelet and egg station. I usually get three (yes three... gotta get that protein) over easy eggs. Or I ask for two and do a DIY RC breakfast sammie with English muffins (less bread than a bagel) and Swiss cheese. Swiss probably isn't the best cheese out there for you but Brad got me hooked on it when we lived in the apartment this last summer.

So when it comes to breakfast, you can totally skip the donuts and muffins they leave out (all day most of the time (ew)) and grab something way better for you. You will feel so much better through out the day.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
