I'm not exactly sure why or how frozen foods got a bad rap, but there are actually benefits to buying frozen produce and freezing your own foods. Here are a few I can think of from the type of my head.
1. Maximized Nutrients
Frozen produce are often frozen soon after harvest in order to minimize nutrient loss, so they store higher levels of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants than fresh fruits and veggies.
2.Maximized Preservation
Freezing your foods is a great way to delay spoilage. They unfortunately won’t stay fresh forever (cries) but they will last way longer than if you were to keep it out or just in the fridge. How does this even work? Well when you freeze your food, not only does the enzyme activity that causes the food to go bad slow down, but also the water in your food forms ice crystals, which prevents microorganisms from feeding off of it and further cultivating. So what does this mean? This means you get to provide a nice home for your leftovers as well as be the helpful member of society that you are and cut down your food waste (speaking of which did you know that Americans are wasting around $160 billion worth of food per year?). If we freeze foods, we can help decrease food waste- hell yeah go team.
3. Maximize Happiness
You know how when you accidentally leave a $5 bill in your jean pocket (or whatever pocket) and then find it a few weeks later, and it feels like you just got a gift from yourself? Well, I guess freezing your food is a similar concept in that one day you get to look in the freezer and find out that there’s some beautiful leftover food waiting for you.
With this information in mind, happy frozen produce shopping, or, if you're into freezing your fruit yourself, happy freezing!
