The magnitude of the problem surrounding increased environmental devastation is overwhelming. It is easy to understand the importance of industrial changes which should be made to help alleviate this problem to reduce human impact on the globe, but our power as individuals can often feel futile and insignificant.
The changes which we can make in our own lives will result in powerful accumulations and overall carbon footprint reduction. These changes do not have to be drastic, they do not have to be expensive, and they do not have to be time consuming. Taking small steps will produce genuine change throughout time.
The first small step is to make your breakfast free from animal products. The meat and dairy industry contribute significant amounts to overall global devastation and environmental damage. Every meal you make is a choice to either contribute or step away from the impacts of these industries.
Breakfast is one of the easiest meals to reduce consumption of these products. Avocado toast, cereal (with soy milk!), smoothies and oatmeal all are delicious and filling options to start your day while simultaneously protecting the planet. This does not have to be as extreme as an entire vegan diet, but small choices will lead to real results.
The second step you can make is to shop second hand. The fashion industry produces devastating amounts of waste each year which ends up in land fills. Fast fashion contributes to an environment of high demand with low costs. This industry is also notoriously abusive and negligent towards workers. You do not have to remove yourself entirely, but understanding the implications of what you're purchasing is a step towards a better future.
Thrift stores are a fun way to shop in an ethically and environmentally friendly way. Savers, Goodwill and Salvation Army are all places where you can buy clothes used, for extremely reduced prices and disrupt the harmful cycle of the fast fashion industry.
The last step seems obvious but it is quite easy to be negligent of. The amount of water you use in a day has real affects on industry and the globe. Water is a global resource, and while the United States for the most part does not experience the effects of a shortage, the impact occurs on a global scale. Less developed nations experience the negative impact on a grand scale. Turning off the faucet when you brush your teeth, turning off the water when you shave in the shower and overall mindfulness in consumption.
It is important to remember that this is our planet and we have to be aware of the impact that we contribute through our actions. With steps as small and simple as these there is almost no excuse to not take personal steps towards a more eco-friendly and self-aware existence on Earth.
