Cosplaying is costume design year around and an expensive hobby that a lot of geeks have. Typically, it can be heartbreaking to see the cost to make and become your favorite hero or TV show character. That is why I am here today to tell you my secrets as an experienced cosplayer.
1. Go thrift shopping.
media.giphy.comLike Catullus, an ancient Roman poet, you probably do not have much money. Thrift shops like Goodwill or other second-hand stores are great to find base pieces. This is great if you also know simple clothing hacks with a sewing machine too. The best thing is that it is all cheap. You just have to have time to look. You can even find blankets and other fabrics which can be cut up and used.
2. Buy a sewing machine.
GiphySewing machines are helpful for having to hem up clothes that are too big or even adding stuff on to the fabric. Sewing machines can be expensive but are great to have. Mine is a Brother JX2517, which is $250 at Walmart but there are cheaper ones. It comes in handy.
3. Get free stuff!
GiphyYes, you read right. There are ways to get free patterns. There are websites that make them just for that like Fleece Fun and many others. Fleece Fun also has YouTube videos for some patterns. There are other free things too. You can even make things with stuff you already have like paper and such. My favorite recipe for paper mache is just two items, flour, and water. You can make it thick or watery as you want. It works for anything.
4. Price match everything.
GiphyYou may be like "WHAT?!" but it is always good to do the math first. Always plan out your prices to make sure you will have enough for your personal needs too. I typically use Walmart, Hobby Lobby, and Michael's. I would Joann's but their prices are well...pricey. Amazon, Wish, eBay, and other online stores are helpful too. Just be careful of scams. Coupons are amazing too. Most craft stores have them online.
5. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
GiphyAlways see what you have laying around that can be changed or even used in your cosplay. You may just need that one shirt in the back of your closet. You can also find props lying around like a nice flower crown or your sister's old pair of shoes that you can wear. Anything can be revamped and changed with the right amount of craft supplies and hot glue. Sometimes, even your old cosplay props and clothes can be reused.
