I'm pretty sure everyone around the world knows who The Chainsmokers are by now. If you're deep in the electronic dance music scene like me, I noticed that there is a rise of up-and-coming DJs/producers, who usually perform in a duo or trio.
Don't get me wrong, there had always been duo/trio DJs back in the day such as the Swedish House Mafia and Daft Punk, but for some reason, they seem to be a trend now. For example, Lost Kings, based in Los Angeles, are known for their recent, popular song "Phone Down" in collaboration with Emily Warren. Another example is Cheat Codes, based in Los Angeles as well, which they are known for their explicit, melodic single "Sex."
The list of these duo/trio DJs goes on: Young Bombs, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Galantis, GTA, ARMNHMR, Louis the Child, Cash Cash, and etc.
The reason why I bring this up is because there is a possibility we're tired of seeing just one DJ jumping, dancing, and beat-matching to tracks on the main stage. It's cool for the individual DJs to jam out to their songs they produced, but it could get lonely up there most of the time.
Most of the time the DJs/producers will have a random individual on tour to cover their necessities (i.e. food, water, flights, etc.), but these individual DJs could also have their best friend be their tour manager to share those special moments together. Mentioning about bringing a friend into the music industry, you could add another individual to this journey of yours if he/she could produce something or give good feedback to a certain track by adding their recommendations.
Of course, the EDM scene is “oversaturated” with aspiring producers, but whoever is trying to produce a popular song, just remember that two creative heads are better than one.
Next week I will be talking about the future of live shows for the EDM scene and how there will be a minimal usage of turntables, also known as CDJs.
