In the wake of the ridiculous controversy over Starbucks’ red cups, Dunkin’ Donuts has just unveiled their own line of holiday cups.
Some people believe that Dunkin' Donuts unveiled their cups in response to the Starbucks debate. The coffee chain, however, has actually been releasing holiday cups for years. Like Starbucks, the designs of Dunkin’ Donuts’ seasonal cups change each year, but Dunkin' always includes the word "Joy."
In an email statement to NBC, Dunkin Donuts stated, "For many years Dunkin' Donuts has served coffee in festive cups featuring the word 'joy' as part of our annual celebration of the season and holiday offerings. We believe this conveys the happiness and spirit of the holiday season in a way that resonates with our guests."
For those that think Dunkin’ Donuts released these cups in reaction to the Starbucks debate, this design was prepared well in advance. Dave Tupper, the creative director of a Brooklyn-based design agency, stated that approval and production of designs is not done quickly. "Even if you had zero approval and the design was finished, it would still take at least a month or two months to get it printed and distributed,” Tupper said.
In addition to cups, the coffee chain has released seasonal designs on donut boxes and on the donuts themselves.
Since their release, the Dunkin’ Donuts cups have been well received, overall, especially by those who think Starbucks’ cups contribute to the so-called war on Christmas.”Nevertheless, most customers really don’t care about cup designs, but rather the drink they purchased inside it.
