Dunham and Duggar: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Dunham and Duggar: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Last week, TLC finally came to the long-awaited decision to axe their hit series, "19 Kids & Counting," which documented the lives of the unusually-sized Duggar family. The cancellation came about after news that Josh Duggar, the family's oldest son, had inappropriately touched his sisters as a young teen. Reactions to the cancellation have ranged from ecstatic to enraged, but that's not the most surprising part. No, most surprising is the moral equivalency, with fans comparing Duggar's actions with that of Lena Dunham.

For those who might not know, "Girls" star Dunham released a memoir last year, detailing the events of her childhood and college years. In it, she admits to some morally dubious behavior, most of which involved her little sister Grace. In a disturbingly nonchalant manner, Lena discusses opening her infant sister's vagina, masturbating in bed with her, and bribing her with candy in exchange for kisses on the mouth. By her own admission, some of this behavior continued until Lena was seventeen and her sister eleven.

Rather than hold Dunham and Duggar responsible for the harm committed against their siblings, I've more often seen people condemn one in an effort to prop up the other. Defenders of Duggar have argued that Dunham's career was relatively unscathed after the release of her memoir, and thus the Duggar scandal should be similarly swept under the rug. Meanwhile, defenders of Dunham have argued that what Duggar did was worse, as if that somehow makes her actions acceptable. Unfortunately, sides seem to be predominantly be formed based on the political and religious affiliations of Dunham and Duggar, but that's another matter entirely.

What bothers me is the fact that no one seems to seems to be holding them both accountable.

Have people become so blind to their own biases that they can't hold someone they might like and agree with accountable? Yes, both Dunham and Duggar were kids themselves when they engaged in the behavior, and yes, their sisters have since forgiven the behavior, but that doesn't negate them of responsibility. It doesn't matter if they were pubescent and curious about their sexuality, an excuse which both have used to try and downplay their actions. They were old enough to know better – they had to know their advances were unwanted if they resorted to lies and bribes – but it seems that wasn't enough to stop them. Their siblings were young children who could not and did not willfully consent to the inappropriate behavior inflicted upon them, and yet they were treated as sex objects. I'm no expert on the subject, nor do I pretend to be, but I know wrong when I see it. And what Dunham and Duggar did was more than wrong, it was sexual abuse. It's not to be excused, and it's most certainly not to be downplayed for the sake of an agenda.

So rather than use one to diminish the wrongs of the other, let's acknowledge the hurt they inflicted, and be aware of the often unspoken travesty that is familial abuse.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
