New Year's Eve has continued to be the second most dangerous day to drive, with St. Patricks Day at number one. Even with all of the alternatives for drunk driving, ten-thousand-three-hundred-and-twenty-two Americans still died in 2012 from drunk driver-related accidents.
10,322.
Let that number sink in. That's 10,322 lives ended. 10,322 families forever changed. 10,322 funerals attended. And at least 10,322 people who lost someone forever.
Coming from a small town where Uber and Lyft are not as accessible, so many people think that driving after a few drinks isn't doing much harm. People think that "just tipsy" or "barely buzzed" makes it "OK" as if there is ever a time that it is "OK" to put lives at risk.
In 2009, my family was affected by this nationwide statistic. My uncle left our holiday party after drinking and was never seen alive again. I wasn't even able to see him that night. I don't even know when was the last time I saw him.
The average funeral cost at least about $10,000. So I guess if you are going to put a price on a life, that's where you would start.
But that doesn't include all of the memories and moments missed out on. Or all of the tears shed and heartbreaks.
The average DUI cost about $10,090 including lawyer fees and loss of income. But that cost also doesn't include the loss of memories and moments due to the change of lifestyle. When getting a DUI typically your license is revoked, you have to attend addiction/management classes, and your face is plastered in the newspaper. Not that publicity should be included in your reasons not to drink and drive, but just keep in that mind.

The average Uber cost about $24. That's less than you would even spend in drinks on NYE.
The average tow cost about $75. And that allows both you and your car to make it home safely while skipping the headache of finding your car the next morning or finding someone to give you a ride the next morning. I mean what's $75 compared to $10,090?
Even if you took both an Uber and a tow truck, you would still be saving $10,801 compared to a DUI.
So how out this New Year's (or really any day) if you happen to see someone getting ready to drive after been drinking, try to intervene and bring them to the real terms of their decision. Bring them back inside and call a tow truck or another ride.
Drunk driving is not worth your life or the lives of others.
