Flibanserin is a 5-HT receptor modulator that is used to treat premenopausal female patients who have widespread, acquired, hypoactive sexual drive problem (HSDD).
Apart from its affinity for serotonin receptors in the brain, Flibanserin also binds similarly to 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors. Flibanserin may occupy 5-HT2A receptors in greater proportion than 5-HT(1A) receptors in circumstances of high 5-HT levels in the brain (e.g., under stress). Furthermore, Flibanserin may moderately inhibit D4 (dopamine) receptors as well as 5-HT2B and 5-HTB2C. Its effect on neurotransmitter receptors can cause serotonin levels to fall while raising norepinephrine and dopamine levels, resulting in good therapeutic outcomes.
The following adverse effects are possible with flibanserin:
- CNS depression
- Sedation
- Somnolence
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
- Dryness of mouth
